May Challenge #3 - Escher Effects

I have always loved the artwork of M. C. Escher. Apart from his wonderfully impossible house of stairs that lead you down to a higher level and a perpetually falling waterfall, he played with mathematical symmetry and produced beautiful examples of tesselation. We see tessellation every day: bricks in a wall, cells in a honeycomb, mosaics on the floor, seeds in a sunflower and even scales on a snake!

Our third challenge for you this month is to do some tessellating on your page. Sounds too complicated? Call it patchwork then! Include some patterns on your page created by piecing together paper shapes.

You could create a patchwork of random shapes by layering them creatively. Heather Leopard showed a clever way to get a patchwork effect patterned paper over on Shimelle's blog last month.

And of course, clever folding of circles produces some amazing results as Davinie shows us on her blog here.

Our very own Master Forger Clair included Quilting as inspiration for her Stitching on Paper Classes - check out the examples - can you spot another Master Forger there?

Our Guest Designer Jane got blocky on her layout with random rectangles:

Clair made this 6x8 layout, based on the worked of Escher inspired artist, Bridget Riley, after visiting an exhibition at Tate Liverpool. The title is also taken from an Escher quote "You have to retain a sense of wonder. That's what it's all about."

Lynnette added a touch of tessellation on her layout about her son's role as King Triton the Merman in Little Mermaid Jr.  The overlapping circles reminded her of scales.  Love when it all comes together like that!  See more close-ups on her blog here.

Do please share your kits and creations to Mr. Linky so that we can all come and look.  Perhaps save a special project using this month's kit and join in with your very own Members' Blog Hop towards the end of the month!
