January 2021 - Just the Gist of It

Welcome back to the blog for Just the Gist of It!

The idea behind this post is to give you a possible starting point for your kit.

Sometimes, we find ourselves looking at the inspiration kit and we just don't know where to start. Maybe the inspiration kit is just not our style but we still want to find a way to create a kit that is. Perhaps we want to get our kit pulled together quickly and then an easy starting point might be just the thing we are looking for. Or maybe you'd like to change things up and try a new way of pulling your kit together.

Whatever your reason for needing a little help in getting started, we are here to help.

Let's just remind ourselves of the fabulous inspiration kit this month, courtesy of the "Flurries" Deluxe Theme kit from the Not Just For Boys kit club

When I pull my kits together - both regular and mini-kits like this month - I tend to go for one of three approaches: colour, paper patterns or themes. I focus on one or two elements of the kit in one of the categories and then head off from there.

This month, I'd like to focus on ONE piece of paper from the original kit that jumped out of me and which I think really sums up the whole feel, look, colour and theme of the inspiration kit.

This sheet of cut apart pocket cards (Carta Bella Let It Snow 3x4 journalling cards) just has a bit of everything.

Let's break it down.

All the main colours of the inspiration kit are represented - the woodgrain browns, icy as well as darker shades of blue, festive reds and greens.

Then there are the phrases and text on the cards which give us winter, Christmas and jokey word-play.

The nature, winter, Christmas, cosy at home, and snow themes are shown in the illustrations.

And finally, there are several of the patterns from other papers in the kit such as the repeated snowflakes, the woodgrain, the plaid and checks (from the b-sides) and the nature pine tree sprigs and cones.

So why not take this single sheet of paper as your kit starting point and see where it takes you? We'd love to hear if you try this out!

There's plenty to keep you inspired this month so don't forget to come back here regularly for ideas and challenges. The month is going to look like this:

  •  4th January: Forgery on the Fourth - Master Forgers share simple ideas for creating kit elements
  •  6th January: Mini-kit Reveal and Project Showcase - inspiration for a smaller kit or project idea
  • 12th & 18th January: Challenges #1 & #2 - to inspire you to get creating from your own kit
  •  24th January: Follower Showcase - who has caught our eye this month
  • 30th January: Killing Kits - An idea or two for using up the bits & pieces left in your kit box

We always love to see your work, so please share your kits and projects with us.

You can post them in our Facebook Community, or share them on Instagram (we are @counterfeitkitchallenge or tag us using #counterfeitkitchallenge and #ckcjanuary2021).

Thanks so much for stopping by! We can't wait to see your kits and projects this month!
